Ian Botham earned over £225,000 by auctioning off his prized collection from the 1981 Ashes. The former England cricket icon sold more than 240 items from his illustrious career at an auction in 2023.

As England aims to stage a comeback in the current Ashes series, fans may draw inspiration from Botham’s historic Ashes victory with the team over four decades ago. During the auction held at the KIA Oval’s Long Room two years ago, Botham bid farewell to some iconic items from his Ashes triumph.

Among the items sold, the red cricket ball that Botham used to take five wickets for one run at Edgbaston fetched £20,000. Additionally, a stump extracted by Botham after the famous Headingley win in the 1981 Ashes was sold for £11,000, and his personal man of the match medal was acquired for £19,000.

The remarkable Headingley win over 40 years ago marked a pivotal moment for the England team, with odds of 500/1 for an improbable victory. Botham’s outstanding performance, scoring an unbeaten 149 runs, set a target of 130 for the visitors, and Bob Willis’ eight wickets secured one of cricket’s greatest comebacks for England.

The stump, personally labeled ‘Headingley 81’ by Botham, was among the items sold, along with the stump from the Edgbaston win, which sold for £7,000. Botham’s player of the season medal fetched £8,000, while his England test blazer was sold for £1,800, and a Somerset cap went for £2,700.

Former Australian captain Allan Border’s gifted ‘baggy green’ cap to Botham was auctioned for £13,000. Botham’s England blue day one top from the 1992 World Cup in Australia, where England fell to Pakistan, fetched £11,000. Moreover, his BBC SPOTY Lifetime award, received in 2004, was sold for £3,600.

The decision to sell the items was made by Botham, aiming to downsize, as mentioned by auctioneer Tim Knight. The auction was conducted by Knight’s Auctioneers of Norwich, Norfolk.

Knight noted, “Lord Botham’s name holds a special charm, with the standout lots being those linked to the 1981 Ashes, dubbed Botham’s Ashes. He appears to be downsizing and transitioning to a new phase in life, retaining only a select few items.”

Recognized as one of cricket’s finest players, Botham’s legacy as England’s premier all-rounder remains unparalleled, not only in terms of statistics but also for his impactful presence on the field, entertainment value, and unwavering spirit.
