A nurse has been sentenced to life in prison after being found guilty of murder and attempted murder in a neonatal unit in Argentina. Brenda Cecilia Agüero was convicted of injecting potassium and insulin into infants, resulting in the deaths of five babies and the near-death of eight others.
The case, which began in March 2022 at Hospital Materno Neonatal Ramón Carrillo in Córdoba, raised alarms when several infants experienced sudden health crises. Concerns were raised by neonatologists, leading to a formal investigation.
Tragically, two babies died and two others nearly died during a single shift in June 2022, prompting further scrutiny. Autopsies revealed high levels of potassium and insulin in the deceased children, indicating foul play.
Agüero’s arrest followed these findings, and she was charged in August 2022. Despite the conviction, she maintains her innocence, attributing the accusations to media sensationalism. Her trial revealed disturbing psychological traits and a potential motive related to career advancement.
Apart from Agüero, five others from the hospital, including administrative and health officials, were also found guilty of various charges related to concealing the crimes. The convicted individuals received sentences ranging from jail time to suspended terms.
As the legal process continues, the convicted individuals are currently free under specific conditions.
