A man, believed to be intoxicated, is accused of fatally striking his girlfriend’s brother at a family celebration. The incident occurred following a confrontation between the accused, Stephen Bates, and the victim, Martin O’Donovan, during a party in Woolton, Liverpool.

Witnesses testified that Bates, appearing visibly drunk, had engaged in a physical altercation with O’Donovan earlier in the evening. Despite initial attempts to calm Bates down and drive him home, he allegedly returned to the scene in his car and deliberately ran over O’Donovan.

According to testimony, Bates had consumed a mix of alcoholic beverages at the gathering before the tragic event unfolded. Family members described a tense atmosphere as Bates exhibited aggressive behavior towards O’Donovan, leading to a physical brawl between the two men.

Following the altercation, Bates reportedly made threats towards O’Donovan, prompting concerns among the witnesses. Despite efforts to diffuse the situation and transport Bates home safely, the incident escalated when Bates unexpectedly sped off in his vehicle and struck O’Donovan, resulting in fatal injuries.

Tragically, O’Donovan succumbed to his injuries despite efforts to rescue him from beneath the car. Bates has denied the murder charge but admitted to manslaughter. The trial is ongoing, with further proceedings expected.
