In the latest data released today, it has been revealed that the most economically disadvantaged area in England is located within the constituency of Clacton, represented by Nigel Farage. Specifically, a neighborhood in Jaywick, Clacton-on-Sea, has achieved the highest deprivation score among more than 33,750 small local areas nationwide.
The Ministry of Housing, Communities & Local Government utilized various indicators such as income, employment, education, health, crime, housing, and environmental conditions to calculate the scores for each area. These Indices of Multiple Deprivation (IMD) are considered a reliable method for pinpointing areas facing poverty and disadvantage across the country.
This comes at a time when the Reform UK party, led by Nigel Farage, has announced stringent proposals to eliminate the personal independence payment (PIP) for individuals with anxiety disorders deemed non-serious. The party aims to introduce more frequent reassessments for eligible claimants as part of broader benefit reforms projected to save £9 billion annually by 2029.
The most recent update of these figures reflects the impact of the Covid pandemic on local communities, marking the first revision since 2019. In England, deprivation rates are calculated on a neighborhood level known as LSOAs, each consisting of approximately 1,500 residents.
Clacton’s Tendring 018A area, situated to the west of the town near the coast, has registered the lowest score, repeating its status as the most deprived locality in the country since the previous rankings in 2019. Nigel Farage, who secured his parliamentary seat for Clacton in the last General Election with 46% of the votes, has been a vocal figure in the region.
Meanwhile, Blackpool emerges as the city with the most deprived neighborhoods, with five areas ranking among the top ten. Conversely, St Albans boasts the least deprived regions in England, with areas like Harpenden Town and Harpenden East showcasing lower levels of deprivation.
