A Labour MP has cautioned that Nigel Farage’s opposition to the Online Safety Act could lead to the accessibility of pornography to children through digital devices.
Emily Darlington, a member of the tech committee in Westminster, emphasized the importance of the bill in safeguarding children from online predators. She pointed out that critics of the act were neglecting the real-life impact of online abuse.
In addition, the MP for Milton Keynes Central expressed worries about catfishing, highlighting its prevalence among young individuals in her community.
During an interview with The Mirror, Darlington stated, “The Labour Government aims to restrict access to pornography, while Nigel Farage is advocating for the repeal of the Online Safety Act, potentially making it easily accessible to children.”
She raised concerns about the unrestricted access to explicit content for young individuals via smartphones and the internet, emphasizing that this move is not about free speech but rather about protecting children.
Darlington highlighted the necessity of the Online Safety Act, acknowledging its imperfections but emphasizing its crucial role in safeguarding children and promoting free speech.
Reform UK has opposed the legislation, arguing that it hinders free speech and does not effectively protect children. Darlington, known for her interactions with online offenders, shared distressing catfishing incidents, underscoring the risks faced by young people.
According to Darlington, catfishing poses a significant threat to youth, with a survey revealing that a third of young individuals in her constituency have been approached by strangers online.
She further explained, “These individuals contacting our youth range from predators to groomers, highlighting the alarming rise of online grooming and its real-world consequences for vulnerable young people.”
Reform UK did not provide any response to requests for comments regarding the matter.
