Lily Allen has opened up about the emotional toll her breakup with actor David Harbour has had on her mental well-being.
The couple started dating in 2019 and tied the knot in a Las Vegas ceremony the following year. However, after four years together, their separation was confirmed earlier this year. The 40-year-old singer has been transparent about the challenges she faced post-breakup, particularly concerning her and her children’s welfare.
Reflecting on their relationship, Lily expressed empathy towards her ex-husband, stating, “My kids had a great time living in the U.S. for five years, and I have a lot of understanding for my former partner. I believe we all go through hardships.” Lily disclosed that following their split in December, she struggled with suicidal thoughts upon discovering David’s hidden profile on the celebrity dating app Raya.
Allegedly, Lily also joined Raya herself, posing as someone seeking female companionship, only to find David already had a profile, causing her immense distress. Subsequently, reports claim she sought treatment at a £8,000-per-week trauma center to cope with the aftermath of the breakup.
Despite her battles, Lily confessed to Vogue about her ongoing struggles with addiction and food issues, admitting, “I’ve been facing real challenges with food in recent years. [During the breakup] it became severely problematic.”
Remaining sober for six years, Lily described the intense emotional turmoil she experienced and the temptation to resort to substances. Recognizing the need for assistance, she voluntarily checked into a residential facility, acknowledging the importance of self-awareness and seeking help.
While making progress, Lily acknowledged in a live podcast recording in March that she was still grappling with her emotions, expressing concerns about a potential breakdown. Following the split, she announced she would be leaving the Brooklyn home she shared with David, opting for a new residence in London to raise her daughters.
The relocation and decorating process in her new London flat served as a therapeutic outlet for Lily during this challenging transition. She explained her choice of residence on her podcast, emphasizing her connection to the neighborhood and her long-held dream of living there.
In a separate interview, Lily shared her feelings of isolation and heaviness while in New York post-separation. The full story can be found in the November issue of British Vogue.
