McLaren has issued a formal apology to their drivers, Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, following their disqualification from the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Despite finishing in second and fourth place, McLaren faced scrutiny from race stewards due to potential violations concerning the minimum width of the rearmost skid on their car.
In a statement released by McLaren team principal Andrea Stella, it was revealed that the team breached Article 3.5.9 of the Technical Regulations, which mandates a minimum skid thickness of 9mm. Car 4 exceeded this limit by a maximum of 0.12mm, while Car 81 surpassed it by a maximum of 0.26mm.
Both cars encountered unexpected porpoising during the race, leading to increased ground contact not observed during practice sessions. McLaren is currently investigating the root causes of this issue, including incidental damage sustained by both vehicles post-race, which resulted in heightened floor movement.
Acknowledging that the breach was unintentional and without any intent to manipulate regulations, McLaren expressed regret for the points lost by Norris and Piastri at a critical juncture in their Championship campaigns. The team also extended apologies to their partners and fans for the unforeseen turn of events.
Despite the setback, McLaren remains resolute in their focus on the remaining two races of the season. The disqualification has reshaped the Drivers’ World Championship landscape, with Norris still leading with 390 points, closely followed by Piastri. Reigning champion Max Verstappen’s victory in the Las Vegas Grand Prix has propelled him back into contention for the title.
Both Norris and Piastri voiced their disappointment over the disqualification, setting the stage for an intense finale in Qatar and Abu Dhabi. With the title race heating up, the pressure is on for all contenders to maintain composure and capitalize on any opportunities that may arise.
Verstappen, reflecting on the championship battle, emphasized the importance of car performance and the role luck might play in determining the ultimate outcome. As the season draws to a close, anticipation mounts for what promises to be a thrilling conclusion to the 2025 Formula 1 campaign.
