MPs have raised concerns about the heavy tax burden on British pubs, emphasizing the need for significant actions to alleviate the strain on the industry.
The All-Party Parliamentary Beer Group (APPBG) highlighted that recent regulations are stifling the potential growth of the pub and brewing sector in the UK.
Recognizing the industry as a significant economic contributor, supporting over a million jobs and adding £34.3 billion in economic value, the group emphasized the role of pubs in driving high street revitalization, fostering community unity, and promoting economic expansion.
The Mirror is actively advocating for the rescue of struggling pubs in Britain.
In a set of proposals, the MPs outlined that the sector could expand by 6% annually with appropriate policies, leading to the creation of half a million new jobs by 2030.
Among the recommendations, the APPBG suggested reducing or eliminating employer National Insurance Contributions, especially for young employees under 25. Additionally, they called for substantial changes in Business Rates, a minimum 5% reduction in beer duty, and aligning the definition of alcohol-free beers with European standards at 0.5%.
The group also proposed enhancing investment in employment and skills development, particularly in brewing innovation, and revamping apprenticeships.
Furthermore, they advised extending capital allowances to cover pub furniture and kitchen or cellar equipment, offering double allowances for projects supporting Net Zero initiatives like solar panels.
Labour MP Tonia Antoniazzi, the chair of APPBG, emphasized the need to address the tax burden on the sector to unlock growth opportunities quickly, benefiting local communities, policymakers, and the government.
Recently, Keir Starmer commended the Mirror for its efforts to support struggling pubs in Britain and outlined plans to extend pub operating hours.
The government has pledged to reduce bureaucratic barriers hindering pubs by revising stringent rules affecting outdoor food service, live music events, and noise complaints, following recommendations from a task force.
The Mirror continues its campaign to back the industry through the Your Pub Needs You initiative, advocating for a government support fund for pubs, recognizing exceptional community contributions by bars, and assisting groups interested in purchasing their local pubs.
A Government spokesperson reiterated the importance of thriving pubs in community development and economic growth, highlighting ongoing support initiatives and plans to streamline regulations and enhance the business rates system.
