“Parents Laugh at Hospital After Fatally Beating Newborn”

Must read

An atrocious couple, the parents of a nine-day-old infant, callously laughed while presenting their lifeless daughter at a hospital after fatally beating her, as detailed in court proceedings.

On October 31, Hilary Johnson II, aged 24, received a 19-year prison term, and Z’ibreyea S. Parker, aged 22, was sentenced to 10 years after admitting guilt earlier this year in connection to the tragic demise of their newborn child, I’ijayah Johnson.

In the afternoon of May 4, 2024, Johnson and Parker brought I’ijayah, unresponsive and cold to the touch, to the Children’s Hospital of the King’s Daughters. They claimed that the infant had fallen from her stroller and hit her head while Johnson was out jogging two days prior.

Medical staff quickly realized that I’ijayah’s severe injuries did not align with the parents’ explanation. Prosecutors revealed that the couple’s demeanor at the hospital was disturbing, as they struggled to provide basic information about their daughter and were seen laughing during the check-in process.

According to reports from CBS affiliate WTKR, Parker downplayed the seriousness of I’ijayah’s injuries, insisting they had tried to treat her burns and wounds at home before seeking medical help when her condition deteriorated.

Hospital records indicated various signs of abuse on I’ijayah’s body, including burns on her feet and other areas, cuts on her head and face, and bruises on her back.

Subsequent investigations by Norfolk Police and an autopsy confirmed that I’ijayah had died from blunt trauma to her head and torso, with burns on her feet being a contributing factor. The autopsy also revealed multiple internal and external injuries, including broken ribs, inconsistent with a fall.

In a plea deal, Johnson admitted to second-degree murder, while Parker pleaded guilty to child abuse causing serious injury. The murder charge against Parker and a child abuse charge against Johnson were dropped.

Following the sentencing, Attorney Ramin Fatehi emphasized the vulnerability of newborns and the tragic fate that befell I’ijayah due to her parents’ actions.

I’ijayah’s grandfather, Hilary Johnson Sr., had expressed concerns about the couple’s parental abilities even before the tragedy, warning hospital staff about the situation after I’ijayah’s birth.

At the time of I’ijayah’s birth, Johnson and Parker, who had mental health issues, were living in a tent under a highway. Despite offers of assistance, they declined to take up the opportunity for stable housing.

Johnson Sr. lamented the drastic change in his son and daughter-in-law’s behavior, expressing hopes that they would prioritize the well-being of their child.
