Reform UK faced a setback in failing to secure a crucial Welsh constituency, indicating vulnerability within Nigel Farage’s party, according to statements made by Andy Burnham. The Mayor of Greater Manchester emphasized a growing willingness across the nation to confront and halt the advances of right-wing groups. This development follows Labour’s significant loss in the recent Caerphilly Senned by-election, a historically held position since its establishment in 1999.
Despite being favored by bookmakers and allocating considerable resources to the campaign, Reform fell short in the election with Plaid Cymru securing 47% of the vote compared to Reform’s 36%.
During a discussion with The Mirror’s Real Britain columnist Ros-Wynne Jones, Andy Burnham highlighted the positive takeaway from the Caerphilly by-election, asserting that Reform can be defeated. He expressed the existence of a strong desire to oppose, challenge, and thwart their agenda.
Liverpool City Region Mayor Steve Rotheram echoed Burnham’s sentiments, emphasizing the need for a direct confrontation with Reform. He stressed the importance of unity within the Labour Party to counter the rising influence of the Greens.
Burnham also expressed satisfaction with Lucy Powell’s victory in the deputy leadership contest. He underscored the necessity for a unified and inclusive approach within the party to effectively combat Reform’s populist right-wing tactics.
Plaid Cymru leader Rhun ap Iorwerth claimed victory as a validation of the party’s positive vision for Wales. He asserted that the electorate in Caerphilly opted for hope, progress, and a pro-Wales stance by supporting Plaid Cymru. This outcome signifies a shift, positioning Plaid Cymru as the primary choice for Wales to counter the billionaire-backed Reform party and offer a better future for all residents.
The message from the Caerphilly election is clear: Wales is ready for new leadership, and Plaid Cymru is leading the charge towards a more promising future for the nation.
