Former Red Bull executive Richard Hopkins has given an update on the health status of Michael Schumacher and expressed doubts about the possibility of the Formula 1 icon making a public appearance again. Schumacher’s well-being has been kept confidential since he sustained a head injury in a skiing mishap in December 2013.
Schumacher, now 56 years old, has remained out of the public spotlight since being placed in a medically induced coma following the accident almost 12 years ago.
During his tenure at Red Bull, Hopkins, who developed a close bond with Schumacher during the latter’s racing career, emphasized the importance of respecting Schumacher’s privacy regarding his health condition.
In a recent interview with SPORTbible via William Hill, Hopkins mentioned, “I haven’t received any recent updates. I’ve heard that he is under the care of a personal doctor from Finland.” Hopkins also conveyed his belief that it is unlikely for the public to witness Schumacher again due to the family’s desire to maintain secrecy around his health for valid reasons.
Acknowledging his distance from Schumacher’s inner circle compared to individuals like Jean Todt, Ross Brawn, and Gerhard Berger, who have been able to visit Schumacher, Hopkins highlighted the necessity of upholding the family’s wish for privacy.
Having established a friendship with Schumacher in the 1990s while working at McLaren before transitioning to a senior position at Red Bull, Hopkins acknowledged his limited access to information about Schumacher’s current state and reiterated the importance of respecting the family’s privacy wishes.
Hopkins emphasized the level of confidentiality surrounding Schumacher’s health, stating, “Even if I did possess any knowledge, the family would be displeased if I disclosed it, as that is not the family’s desire.”
