Sir Brendan Foster recently shared his cherished memory from the Great North Run, marking 44 years since its inception. The founder of the renowned event reflected on the upcoming race as thousands of participants, including fun runners and elite athletes, gathered in Tyneside for the world’s largest half marathon.
With 60,000 entries for the Sunday race and an additional 20,000 participants expected at the GNR festival, Sir Brendan reminisced about the unforgettable 2013 run hailed as the “greatest road race in history.” He recalled the epic battle among running legends Mo Farah, Haile Gebrselassie, and Kenenisa Bekele, where Farah faced a rare defeat against Bekele.
Expressing his excitement for this year’s event, Sir Brendan looked forward to Dame Kelly Holmes’ presence, noting her nervous anticipation. He credited the event’s success to the North East’s supportive community, with an anticipated 200,000 spectators along the route.
