As the fall season sets in and temperatures decrease, many households are gearing up for higher energy expenses. Consequently, it comes as no surprise that numerous individuals are seeking cost-effective ways to keep warm without cranking up the heat.
One popular solution among savvy consumers is the Oodie, which are essentially oversized wearable blankets typically equipped with a large hood and a spacious kangaroo pocket.
The trend for Oodies gained momentum in 2020, with UK sales from the Australian company reportedly surging by over 200%. Last year, a reader of Martin Lewis’s Money Saving Expert (MSE) website shared her positive experience with warm hooded blankets amid escalating energy costs, noting that she had not needed to increase the heating after purchasing one.
“I bought an oversized hoodie blanket to snuggle up in, and haven’t used heating since,” she mentioned in a forum post dating back to 2022. This enthusiast is not alone in extolling the virtues of this garment.
A mother of two also informed Manchester Evening News that their family’s Oodies, worn for several years, have been highly effective in keeping them warm both indoors and during outings in their campervan.
“When you want to avoid turning on the heating, these are fantastic,” the mother, who follows Martin Lewis’s advice, commented in 2024. “The kids adore theirs and never complain about feeling cold.”
While authentic Oodies can be pricey, a clearance sale is currently offering discounts on both children’s and adults’ styles. Many adult Oodies have seen a price reduction from £65 to £39, providing customers with a saving of £26.
Moreover, the website features a diverse selection of popular character-themed products, including Harry Potter, Pokémon, Hello Kitty, and PAC-MAN.
For those hesitant to invest in a genuine Oodie, alternative retailers offer similar cozy blanket hoodies. Dunelm sells these for children and adults, with some priced as low as £11.20, while Matalan and John Lewis also offer their own versions.
However, in light of the endorsement for Oodies from fans, an MSE spokesperson clarified that any products mentioned on the MoneySavingExpert site are not endorsements but are the result of journalistic research from the MSE team and Martin Lewis.
*A previous version of the article referred to ‘Oodie’ when the forum user actually mentioned a generic oversized hoodie blanket.
