A young girl tragically ended her life following a visit to a reservoir with her father, as revealed in a recent inquest. Qudsiyah Mahmood, a 13-year-old from Halifax, West Yorkshire, persuaded her ailing father to take her to Baitings Reservoir near Ripponden, promising good results in her upcoming school exams. Regrettably, it was later disclosed at Bradford Coroner’s Court that her request was a guise.
Struggling with issues related to her sexuality and gender identity, the teenager passed away after falling from a parapet at the picturesque location on May 28 around 1:20 pm. Assistant Coroner Caroline Chandler determined that what was initially perceived as an accident was indeed a deliberate act of self-harm.
Reports from Leeds Live indicated Qudsiyah’s deteriorating mental health, with evidence of self-harm and messages sent to friends on Snapchat hinting at her tragic intentions. Despite being known as a bright and friendly individual by teachers and peers, she grappled with questions about her sexuality, gender identity, and religious beliefs, at times identifying as agnostic and genderfluid.
Prior to the incident, Qudsiyah persistently urged her father to take her to Baitings Reservoir, a place frequently visited by the family. Despite his health concerns, they made the trip, capturing photos and videos at the location. Tragically, moments later, the father sensed something was amiss and heard a splash as his daughter entered the water.
Initially perceived as an accident, further investigation and the recovery of Qudsiyah’s body the next day revealed the true nature of her demise. Post-mortem results confirmed drowning as the cause of death, leading to the conclusion that her actions were intentional. Social media messages obtained by the police from friends shed light on Qudsiyah’s mental state and inner struggles, ultimately leading to the ruling of suicide by the coroner.
In a heartfelt message, the headteacher of Crossley Heath in Halifax, where Qudsiyah was a student, described her as a joyful and kind individual who positively impacted the school community. The school extended condolences to her family during this difficult time.
