The Foreign Secretary emphasized the urgency of providing assistance to the people in Gaza without delay, calling on Israel to remove restrictions on essential supplies. Yvette Cooper is set to visit Jordan to witness the delay in delivering much-needed aid at the border, including British-funded supplies stuck at a warehouse meant for the conflict-affected region.
Expressing her concerns ahead of the trip, Ms. Cooper stressed that the residents of Gaza cannot wait any longer for necessary aid. During her inaugural visit to the Middle East as Foreign Secretary, she is advocating for the removal of barriers hindering the flow of crucial supplies.
In discussions with Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan, the Foreign Secretary focused on ensuring sustainable peace post the Israel-Hamas ceasefire. Emphasizing the fragility of the current ceasefire, Ms. Cooper highlighted the need for collaborative efforts to achieve a just and enduring peace, including the coexistence of Israel and Palestine under a two-state solution.
During her time in Saudi Arabia, Ms. Cooper engaged with volunteers at the King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre to discuss rebuilding Gaza’s healthcare infrastructure and participated in a traditional tea ceremony with prominent Saudi women. She also announced a £6 million funding initiative for life-saving healthcare for women, targeting areas such as emergency birth assistance in Gaza where many women are compelled to give birth outside hospitals weekly.
The upcoming visit to Jordan will involve discussions on healthcare support for women, with Ms. Cooper scheduled to meet Jordanian leaders for talks on post-conflict recovery efforts. Additionally, she plans to interact with schoolgirls, visit hospitals, and observe the training of Palestinian security personnel based in the West Bank.
