“UK Homes Embracing Internet TV, Traditional Broadcasts at Risk”

Must read

Millions of households in the UK are already utilizing the internet for live and on-demand content consumption. A recent study, sponsored by Sky, indicates that the majority of homes could potentially transition to internet-based TV by the mid-2030s, leading to the retirement of traditional terrestrial TV distribution methods like Freeview.

Various options for aerial-free TV viewing exist, such as Sky’s latest streaming services and the Freely platform, which is operated by the creators of Freeview. Freely, integrated into many new televisions, enables access to both live and on-demand programming through a broadband connection.

As more internet-connected devices enter homes, a decline in traditional broadcast TV viewership is observed, with an increasing number of households turning to streaming services.

An additional challenge Freeview faces is the potential sharing of radio frequencies with mobile operators after 2031, impacting the current over-the-air transmission model negatively.

The expenses associated with maintaining the current outdated TV system are escalating, prompting discussions among the UK government about the future course of action.

Nick Herm, Sky’s Group Chief Operating Officer, commented on the research findings, highlighting the compatibility of modern TV and social inclusivity. He emphasized the feasibility of a complete shift to internet-delivered TV by the 2030s, potentially narrowing the digital divide and yielding cost savings by eliminating legacy systems.

While some individuals may embrace the shift towards streaming, concerns have been raised by a petition opposing the discontinuation of Freeview, garnering over 100,000 signatures. Criticisms include the necessity of a stable and costly internet connection for streaming compared to the simplicity of Freeview through an aerial.

One dissatisfied individual affected by the proposed changes is Lynette, an 80-year-old resident of Kent, who values the simplicity and accessibility of Freeview for entertainment and information consumption.

Further updates regarding the future landscape of TV services are anticipated in the near future.
