A recent update in the UK has altered how individuals access the internet, resulting in a noticeable shift in the use of Virtual Private Networks (VPNs). The new regulations, introduced by UK regulator Ofcom, now require individuals to verify their age before accessing adult websites.
The objective of this change is to prevent children from viewing inappropriate content online, as Ofcom reported that 8% of children aged 8-14 in the UK have visited adult websites.
Ofcom emphasized the significance of this change in how adults in the UK consume adult content, highlighting its role in safeguarding children from harmful online material. The requirement to provide personal information such as names, addresses, and financial details to access adult sites has led to a surge in VPN usage among UK internet users.
VPNs, which mask IP addresses and encrypt online traffic, have become popular for accessing geo-restricted content and services, like the US version of Netflix or UK platforms such as Sky Go and BBC iPlayer while abroad.
While it remains unclear if the Ofcom restrictions have directly influenced the rise in VPN adoption, Proton VPN reported a substantial increase in user signups, with a more than 1,400% hourly surge since the implementation of the new rules on July 25.
Proton VPN noted that major global events often prompt spikes in VPN usage, with the current situation in the UK being no exception. Additionally, several VPN services have experienced a surge in downloads, with five services now among the top 10 most downloaded on UK app stores.
While the Ofcom update aims to enhance online safety for children, concerns have been raised regarding the necessity for adults to disclose sensitive personal data to unfamiliar companies.
Jake Moore, Global Cybersecurity Advisor at ESET, highlighted the potential privacy and security risks associated with the Online Safety Act’s age verification requirements, cautioning against the use of untrustworthy VPN services that may compromise user data.
Individuals considering VPN usage are advised to opt for reputable providers and avoid free services, which may pose security risks and lead to data breaches.
