“UKHSA Urges High-Risk Groups to Schedule Flu Vaccine”

Must read

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is urging specific vulnerable groups to schedule an essential vaccination starting this month. This reminder is particularly important for pregnant women, children, individuals over 65 years old, and others at risk.

In a recent announcement, the UKHSA stated that booking is now open for the free NHS flu vaccination. Eligible individuals can check their eligibility and book appointments online or via the NHS App for dates beginning October 1.

Flu vaccines are crucial in protecting against the flu, especially for high-risk individuals. Each year, the NHS administers these vaccinations to people at increased risk of severe illness.

As per the UKHSA’s social media update, six key groups can now book their flu vaccinations from September 1. Additionally, six other groups will be able to schedule appointments starting October 1, 2025.

Eligibility for the flu vaccine can be checked using the NHS app. These vaccinations are offered at GP surgeries, selected pharmacies, maternity services, and care homes. Health and social care workers may also receive the vaccine at their workplace. It is possible to have the flu shot concurrently with other vaccines like COVID-19 and shingles, although not typically with the RSV vaccine.

The NHS advises that individuals with severe allergic reactions to previous vaccine doses or specific ingredients should not receive the flu vaccine. Some flu vaccines in the UK contain egg protein, so inform the vaccinator of any egg allergies.

Common side effects of the flu vaccine include localized pain, mild fever, and body aches, typically resolving within a day or two. It’s worth noting that injected flu vaccines in the UK do not contain live flu viruses and therefore cannot cause the flu.
