Virgin Media is introducing a major upgrade for its TV platform users at no extra cost to them, in response to the free TV service Freeview. The telecoms company has revealed the addition of three new bonus channels that will bring more drama, comedy, and sci-fi content into households.
The enhancement is made possible by an update from Rakuten, introducing three FAST channels (Free Ad-Supported Streaming Television) this month.
The new offerings include Rakuten TV Drama on Channel 462, featuring popular movies like The Big Short, Gosford Park, and JFK. Rakuten TV Comedy on Channel 463 provides content such as Big Momma’s House, The Internship, and Bedazzled for viewers to enjoy. Additionally, viewers can explore Rakuten TV: Sci Fi on Channel 464 for a selection of out-of-this-world content.
Virgin TV 360 and Flex customers will automatically receive the entertainment upgrade, with no action required on their part. The channels will be easily accessible through Virgin Media’s TV guide and can be searched using voice control.
David Bouchier, Chief TV and Entertainment Officer at Virgin Media O2, emphasized the value these new streaming channels bring to customers, offering a range of entertainment options, including Hollywood blockbusters, without any extra charges. With a lineup covering drama, comedy, and more, the addition of these new channels ensures a diverse range of content from Rakuten TV in one convenient location.
This latest update means Virgin TV subscribers now have access to a total of 40 FAST channels, including options like British Screen Classics, Inside Crime, and U&Transport. While a monthly subscription fee is required for Virgin Media TV, the expanded channel lineup now surpasses what is available through completely free services.
