A man standing trial for the alleged abuse and death of his three-month-old son claimed to be an exceptional father during court proceedings. Klevi Pirjani, 37, and his wife Nivalda Santos Pirjani, 34, are facing charges for the murder of their son Miguel, who passed away in November last year after suffering severe injuries including a fractured skull, brain bleeding, and multiple broken bones of different ages.
The prosecution accuses Miguel’s parents of systematically mistreating him leading up to his tragic death. While both defendants deny the allegations, the mother has admitted to a charge related to the child’s death.
In his testimony, Klevi Pirjani, a former chef and digger operator, expressed his deep love for his son and emphasized his constant concern for Miguel’s well-being. Despite being confronted with the severity of his son’s injuries, Pirjani emotionally refuted any involvement in causing harm, affirming his unwavering care and affection for his child.
Emergency services responded swiftly to the family’s residence in Wirral last year upon discovering Miguel in critical condition, rushing him to the hospital where medical professionals identified a series of severe injuries sustained by the infant.
Miguel remained unconscious for several days before succumbing to irreversible injuries, ultimately passing away after life support was withdrawn. Further examinations revealed additional internal injuries, painting a grim picture of the suffering Miguel endured.
During questioning, Pirjani detailed his journey from Albania to the UK, shedding light on his past traumas and the progression of his relationship with Nivalda. He denied allegations of violence towards his wife and refuted claims of mistreatment towards Miguel, emphasizing his active involvement in seeking medical care for the child.
The court also heard conflicting testimonies from Nivalda, who described Klevi as abusive, and Klevi, who dismissed her accusations as untrue. The prosecution asserted that both parents were complicit in the abuse and subsequent death of Miguel, highlighting the non-accidental nature of the injuries sustained by the child.
Both defendants have pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against them, with the trial ongoing under the oversight of Mr. Justice Baker.
