Passengers on a sailing vessel made an urgent distress call when their boat overturned in rough waters hundreds of miles off Cape Hatteras in North Carolina. The Virginia Coast Guard reported that five individuals had to abandon ship as their boat started taking on water. The Coast Guard quickly responded by dispatching a helicopter and ship to rescue the stranded group.
Following the distress call, the crew of the Magic Bus was located in a life raft by the Coast Guard, who successfully retrieved all five individuals in good health. The rescue operation involved coordination with the Cutter Angela McShan, an Air Station Elizabeth City HC-130 Hercules aircraft crew, and an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew. The aircraft carrier USS George HW Bush provided fueling support to the helicopter crew during the rescue due to the long distance from shore.
Footage from the rescue mission showed the sinking boat and the successful recovery of the passengers by the MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter. This incident occurred shortly after another rescue operation where passengers from a sinking catamaran were saved by naval officials while on a day trip from the Mein Schiff 1 cruise ship. The passengers had to jump into the water when their boat, named Boca de Yuma, became submerged, leaving them stranded until their rescue.
