Donald Trump has long used age and mental acuity as key tools in his political arsenal. He consistently taunted Joe Biden with a series of derogatory nicknames, aiming to portray Biden as elderly, confused, and unfit for office. Trump not only questioned Biden’s endurance but also turned it into a daily spectacle.
Now, with Trump back in power at 79, attention has shifted from Biden to Trump himself. Concerns about the president’s mental state are no longer limited to social media or partisan attacks. They are now being voiced discreetly, and sometimes not so discreetly, by diplomats, allies, and officials who have interacted with him directly.
Reports indicate that worries about Trump’s health are increasingly becoming a prevalent topic of discussion in European capitals. This development alone should raise alarm bells.
Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico, a political supporter of Trump who has echoed his criticisms of Europe, reportedly expressed concerns about Trump’s “psychological state” to fellow European leaders after a recent meeting with the US president. Diplomats present described Fico as “shocked,” with some stating that Fico went as far as to describe Trump as “out of his mind” and appeared “traumatized” by the encounter.
During a White House meeting earlier this year with executives from the fossil fuel industry, Trump’s focus drifted towards his ballroom construction project, leading him to abruptly comment on the view from a window. This incident, witnessed by Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, highlighted a president losing concentration during a crucial meeting, rather than showcasing typical rally theatrics.
Moreover, there have been instances where Trump has been observed falling asleep during important meetings, sometimes in the presence of world leaders. While occasional fatigue is common, the recurrence of such episodes, coupled with escalating anger, incoherent speech, and apparent memory lapses, paints a concerning picture that cannot be dismissed as mere eccentricity.
Physically, there are also unsettling signs. Trump frequently displays visible ankle swelling and bruising on his hands. The White House has attributed the bruising to extensive handshaking and prolonged aspirin use, while confirming a diagnosis of chronic venous insufficiency, a condition affecting blood flow common in older adults.
Although these signs do not definitively indicate mental decline, collectively, they underscore a fundamental truth that Trump previously emphasized about Biden: age and health are significant considerations, especially when dealing with nuclear codes and global stability.
What adds to the current concern is Trump’s own past actions. He mercilessly targeted Biden for verbal slips and signs of fatigue, demanding cognitive tests and encouraging public mockery. Yet, as questions arise about Trump’s own behavior, he reacts defensively and lashes out against those who inquire. There is a growing perception that Trump’s temperament has shifted towards increased volatility, distraction, and outbursts of anger.
His recent threats, such as those involving Greenland and alliances, no longer appear as calculated provocations but rather as impulsive reactions. When even friendly foreign leaders leave meetings unsettled, it becomes imperative to question what is truly happening. This discussion is not about political point-scoring or amateur diagnosis; rather, it is about contemplating whether the highest office in the world is occupied by someone displaying mounting signs of mental and physical strain.
The danger lies in remaining silent and avoiding frank discussions due to discomfort about the repercussions. If world leaders are already quietly expressing concerns about Trump’s stability, then transparency is essential for voters. America, along with the rest of the world, cannot afford to discover too late that the individual in charge was not as healthy as portrayed.
Trump once ridiculed Biden openly. Now, as serious questions surround his own condition, the laughter has ceased, leaving lingering uncertainties.
