A man hailed as a hero for confronting a train attacker and saving passengers’ lives downplays his actions, stating he simply did what anyone else would do. Stephen Crean, a Nottingham Forest supporter returning from a match, found himself in the midst of a mass stabbing incident on a train bound for Huntingdon station. Upon hearing passengers raise alarm about a knife-wielding individual, Stephen found himself face-to-face with the assailant after unsuccessful attempts to seek refuge at the buffet area or occupied bathrooms.
In a tense confrontation, the assailant threatened Stephen’s life multiple times before Stephen took action, grabbing the knife and sustaining severe injuries to his hands. Subsequently, Stephen managed to escape to an empty toilet on the train to tend to his wounds. The train was swiftly rerouted to Huntingdon station, where Stephen received medical attention and was later taken to a local hospital for treatment.
While recovering from his injuries, Stephen remains humble about his role in the incident, dismissing claims of heroism and emphasizing that others may need assistance more than him. He declined an offer from the Reds owner to cover his medical expenses, citing a preference to make way for those in greater need. Despite missing upcoming matches for his recovery, Stephen remains resolute in his commitment to attending Forest games, expressing a determination to return once he has healed.
The suspect, Anthony Williams, faces charges including attempted murder and possession of a bladed article in connection to the attack. Eleven individuals were hospitalized as a result, with some in critical condition. The incident has not deterred Stephen’s loyalty to his team, as he looks forward to rejoining fellow fans in supporting Nottingham Forest once he has recuperated.
