“Russia Reveals Massive Nuclear Submarine with Poseidon Torpedoes”

Must read

Newly released satellite images have revealed the impressive size of Russia’s latest nuclear-powered submarine equipped to launch powerful nuclear torpedoes. The Khabarovsk-class submarine was spotted in full form for the first time in recent satellite photos, stationed at the Sevmash shipyard workshop.

This submarine, part of Project 09851, is a significant addition to the Russian Navy’s arsenal. Measuring approximately 135-140 meters in length and 13.5 meters in width, the submarine is armed with Russia’s advanced ‘Poseidon’ torpedoes, capable of causing massive tsunamis and carrying nuclear warheads, with an operational range spanning continents.

Described as a “nuclear-powered missile cruiser” by the Ministry of Defence, the Khabarovsk submarine is a top-secret project geared towards maritime defense. While it is not expected to carry ballistic missiles, it will primarily deploy Poseidon torpedoes, complemented by various other weapons systems.

The submarine was recently launched in Severodvinsk after a delay of five years. Defense Minister Andrei Belousov emphasized its strategic importance in safeguarding Russia’s maritime borders and interests across global oceans. With a nuclear engine enabling dives up to 500 meters deep and extended operational periods at sea, the submarine’s construction costs exceed £1 billion, reflecting its experimental design elements and heightened secrecy.

A sister submarine named Ulyanovsk, of the same class, is currently under construction to bolster Russia’s Pacific Fleet capabilities. These submarines will enable Russia to deploy the Poseidon system worldwide, projecting power and deterrence on a global scale.

Preparations are underway for sea trials of the Khabarovsk submarine before its integration into Russia’s nuclear deterrent fleet. The Poseidon system, also known as Kanyon by NATO, represents a groundbreaking innovation in naval warfare, surpassing conventional nuclear deterrence norms. Russian President Putin lauded the system’s capabilities, surpassing even the formidable Sarmat missile, in recent tests.

Putin has positioned Poseidon as a response to perceived threats, emphasizing its unmatched speed and maneuverability in underwater operations. Since its unveiling in 2018, Poseidon has been framed as a countermeasure to US missile defense plans and NATO expansion, underscoring Russia’s strategic stance in global security dynamics.
