Ukraine has carried out a series of powerful drone attacks on Russia, causing extensive fires and destruction in Russian refineries and petrochemical plants. The strikes resulted in electricity outages affecting tens of thousands of Russians and significant damage to Kremlin energy facilities, amounting to millions of pounds.
The attacks targeted various regions, including Volgorod and Kursk, leading to blackouts in retaliation for Kremlin missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. The ongoing conflict has escalated into a missile exchange between the two sides, with the goal of disrupting heating and energy supplies ahead of the approaching winter season on both sides of the border.
A British security source emphasized that Ukraine’s incursions into Russia are a strategic move to prolong the war, impacting ordinary Russians, undermining the Kremlin domestically, and diminishing Putin’s financial resources through energy exports. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky disclosed that Russia has amassed around 170,000 troops in eastern Donetsk, aiming to seize the vital stronghold of Pokroksk for military advancement deeper into Ukraine.
In a recent development, Ukrainian drones struck a petrochemical plant nearly 1,000 miles inside Russia, intensifying long-range air assaults on Russian infrastructure. The attack damaged a water treatment facility, impairing the plant’s operations, as Kyiv continues to target critical facilities like refineries and storage depots.
These actions not only highlight the reality of Russia’s military campaign but also aim at weakening Moscow’s war machinery. By disrupting ammunition depots and transport nodes, Ukraine has hampered Russia’s ability to sustain its frontline operations effectively. Ukraine has requested long-range weapons from the US, such as Tomahawk missiles, for counterattacks against Russia, but President Donald Trump has shown reluctance, preferring diplomatic solutions over military escalation.
The use of drones has caused significant damage in various locations within Russia, including the Nizhny Novgorod region, where industrial zones were ignited, impacting key refineries and petrochemical plants. Ukraine is also deploying new domestically developed missiles, like the Flamingo and Ruta, for combat operations. The Flamingo, a long-range missile, and the Ruta, a drone-missile, have been instrumental in Ukraine’s offensive strategies.
Since Russia’s invasion in February 2022, the conflict has persisted, with Ukraine successfully defending its cities against the initial onslaught. However, the wavering support from the US, particularly from President Donald Trump, has influenced the dynamics of the conflict, creating uncertainty in the international response to the ongoing crisis.
