Renowned retired racing icon Rachael Blackmore has revealed that she is pregnant with her first child, sharing the exciting news alongside fellow jockey Brian Hayes. The couple recently exchanged vows in a cozy ceremony in West Cork on January 5, after a decade-long friendship.
Announcing the joyful news on her Instagram story, Rachael posted a picture of her Volvo car with a baby pram in the boot, playfully commenting on the change in contents. The 36-year-old retired from an illustrious horse racing career last year, making history as the first female jockey to win the Grand National and leading jockey at Cheltenham.
Hailing from Tipperary, Rachael amassed an impressive tally of 575 wins during her time as a professional rider. Her retirement came in May last year following her victory with Minella Times at Aintree in 2021.
In addition to her Grand National triumph, Rachael achieved various accolades, including being the leading rider at the Cheltenham Festival in 2021. Notable wins included the Champion Hurdle with Honeysuckle in 2021 and 2022, as well as victories in other prestigious races such as the Cheltenham Gold Cup and Ryanair Chase.
Recognized for her outstanding achievements, Rachael received the World Sports Star award at the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Awards in 2021. She was also honored by Cheltenham racecourse as the greatest female jump jockey of all time, inducted into the track’s hall of fame.
Rachael and Brian have shared a friendship spanning over a decade, initially meeting at a stable in Co Carlow early in their careers. Despite both being jockeys, their discussions rarely revolve around racing, as Rachael revealed in 2021.
Expressing gratitude for Brian’s support in her career, Rachael acknowledged his significant role upon her retirement, stating his importance exceeded her ability to thank him. The couple, often seen together at various events like Wimbledon and music festivals, have enjoyed a close relationship.
Brian, aged 34, boasts a 17-year career in which he secured one Cheltenham Festival victory. He has ridden for notable figures in the racing world, including trainer Willie Mullins.
