Today, we have revealed the brutal circumstances surrounding his demise in a Russian prison. The presence of epibatidine, a deadly toxin from Ecuador dart frogs, was confirmed in Alexei Navalny’s body through laboratory tests, indicating it likely caused his death.
The Russian government had the means, motive, and opportunity to administer this lethal substance to Navalny while he was imprisoned. Along with other nations investigating the matter, we hold Russia accountable for his passing.
This incident reflects a larger trend of negative activities that pose a growing threat to European security and extend onto British soil. From attacking innocent civilians in Ukraine to spreading hybrid threats across Europe, Russia’s aggression is becoming increasingly concerning.
The post-Cold War optimism of peaceful cooperation between the UK and Russia has faded. We must now prepare to address Russian aggression, including cyber-attacks, disinformation campaigns, and attempts to undermine democracy.
The UK is taking a firm stand against Russia’s unacceptable behavior. Prosecutions under the National Security Act have exposed and deterred Russian-linked proxies. Sanctions have been imposed on the GRU, Russia’s military intelligence agency, reducing its influence in Europe. Efforts to disrupt Russia’s financial support for the conflict in Ukraine, such as targeting its shadow fleet vessels, are underway.
Unity is our strongest asset in dealing with these challenges. Collaborations with international partners, including through NATO, enhance our national security. At the Munich Security Conference, concerted efforts with allies are being made to address these issues, as outlined by the Prime Minister. Despite Russia’s attempts to divide us, its actions only serve to unite us further.
