The former head of the Navy has raised concerns about the potential escalation of the Russia-Ukraine conflict into a nuclear crisis.
Admiral Lord West, the former First Sea Lord, expressed these grave apprehensions, stating that Britain is currently engaged in a de facto war with Moscow.
He highlighted the concept of “grey zone warfare,” which encompasses hostile actions beyond conventional armed confrontations, such as Russian interference with undersea cables and drone intrusions along Nato’s eastern borders.
During an episode of the Lord Speaker’s podcast, Lord West emphasized the complexity of resolving the conflict, emphasizing the undesirability of a full-scale war between Nato and Russia due to the potential dire consequences, including the risk of nuclear escalation.
Former Nato General Secretary Lord Robertson, following a comprehensive review of the nation’s defense capabilities, warned that the UK is inadequately prepared to counter the evolving threats it faces.

Beyond territorial ambitions in eastern Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s broader strategic objectives are causing concern in neighboring countries like Moldova and Azerbaijan, according to Lord Robertson.
Supporting President Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian government is deemed crucial in influencing Vladimir Putin’s decisions and demonstrating that his current actions are not leading to significant gains.
Lord Robertson stressed the importance of persuading Putin that his objectives are unattainable, as his territorial advancements have been minimal thus far, underscoring the significance of international support for Ukraine’s resistance efforts.
