Arsenal and England’s rising talent, Michelle Agyemang, has sustained a significant ACL injury shortly after her remarkable performance that led the Lionesses to victory at Euro 2025. The 19-year-old, honored as the Young Player of the Tournament at the Euros, suffered the injury while playing against Australia on Tuesday.
Expressing her disappointment, Agyemang shared on social media, “I’m saddened by the torn ACL diagnosis. I deeply appreciate all the support and kind words from everyone. Recovery begins now, and I am determined to return even stronger. I am grateful for all things and trust in God that this trial will become a testimony.”
Following the distressing news, England has extended its support to the young athlete. A statement from the team expressed, “As a valued member of the Lionesses family, she has the full backing of the FA and everyone associated with our England teams. Our Lionesses staff will maintain regular communication with Michelle and her club, providing assistance in every aspect of her rehabilitation. We stand by you on your journey to recovery, Michelle.”
England manager Sarina Wiegman expressed concern after the injury occurred off the ball, stating, “It was a terrible moment, and the outlook doesn’t seem favorable based on what I witnessed.”
Agyemang earned her spot on the Euro 2025 squad following an impressive loan spell at Brighton last season. Despite being allowed by her parent club Arsenal to extend her stay on the south coast for another season, she had made five appearances in the WSL before joining the Lionesses during the international break.
Although she made a mark with a goal on her senior England debut in April, it was at the Euros where she truly shone. Following a notable display off the bench in the opener against France, she played a crucial role in keeping Wiegman’s team in the competition with late, decisive goals against Sweden in the quarter-finals and Italy in the semis.
Despite Agyemang’s injury setback, England managed to secure a comfortable 3-0 win over Australia with goals from Aggie Beever-Jones and Lucy Bronze in the first half, taking advantage of an early red card for Australia’s Alanna Kennedy, before Georgia Stanway sealed the victory with a late penalty.
“We aimed to dominate the game,” Wiegman commented after the victory at Pride Park. “With the early sending off for their player, we had a numerical advantage. We learned from our recent experiences playing against ten players and maintained our intensity. While we were solid defensively, there is room for improvement in our attacking play to score more goals.”
