Johnson initially had no intention of creating a film about Bourdain, but everything changed when he met actor Dominic Sessa, who plays the lead role in the movie. Sessa’s perspective on certain issues resonated with Johnson, leading them to explore these themes together in the film.
The script for “Tony” draws inspiration from Bourdain’s early life, chronicled in his book “Kitchen Confidential,” focusing on one pivotal summer in Provincetown, Mass. Johnson and Sessa, both initially unfamiliar with Bourdain’s work, aimed to capture the essence of Bourdain’s humble beginnings as a chef.
By concentrating on Bourdain’s youth, Johnson sidestepped the pressure of depicting the more well-known version of the chef that many fans idolize. The film delves into Bourdain’s formative years, exploring his relationships and self-perception as he navigates the adult world.
“Tony” is set to premiere in theaters across Canada on Friday, Aug. 14, offering a unique perspective on Bourdain’s life and legacy. Johnson emphasized the collaborative effort between himself, Sessa, and Bourdain to create a narrative that resonates with audiences.
