“Canadian Consumers Embrace Affordable Australian Beef”

Must read

Australian beef is now available in Canadian supermarkets at a significantly lower cost compared to Canadian beef, raising concerns among some local producers while providing a more budget-friendly option for consumers. Tyler Fulton, president of the Canadian Cattle Association, highlighted the longstanding presence of Australian beef in the market, particularly gaining visibility for certain steak cuts recently.

Explaining the price gap, Fulton pointed out that Australian beef is produced using a grass-based system with a brief grain feeding period, resulting in a leaner product with less marbling, which may not align with Canadian preferences for beef. Additionally, retailers may leverage a “loss leader” strategy to promote Australian beef sales.

Since the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) took effect in 2018, Australia has increased its access to the Canadian beef market. This trade deal also benefits Canada by granting favorable access to markets like Japan and Vietnam. Fulton emphasized the temporary role of imported beef in meeting short-term supply needs, acknowledging the difference in quality compared to Canadian beef.

Consumer perspectives gathered by CBC News at local supermarkets in Regina revealed varying opinions on the affordability of beef. Some individuals, like Karen Novak, have adjusted their diets due to high beef prices, while others, like Jordan Fieseler, opt to purchase from local producers in bulk. Despite concerns about quality, some shoppers, like Larry Evans, expressed openness to trying Australian beef if Canadian prices continue to rise.

In response to queries, Loblaws emphasized their commitment to supporting Canadian beef producers while offering customers diverse choices at competitive prices. Looking ahead, Fulton expressed optimism about domestic growth opportunities for Canadian producers, noting recent increases in the beef cow herd and anticipating further growth due to favorable market conditions.
