“Deadly 7.7 Magnitude Quake Strikes Eastern Indonesia”

Must read

At least 47 individuals lost their lives following a powerful magnitude 7.7 earthquake and numerous aftershocks hitting off the coast of eastern Indonesia. The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) disclosed that around 2,000 people sought refuge in safer locations.

Due to landslides obstructing roads and disrupting communication networks, rescue teams have not yet accessed Nagekeo, the area nearest to the quake’s epicenter. Despite the immense impact, a tsunami warning was rescinded three hours post-quake.

Residents described the tremors as intense, prompting swift evacuation efforts. In the village of Talibura, Nona, a 51-year-old local resident, recounted the harrowing experience of fleeing to safety with 12 others inside their home.

In Maumere, a port town, initial rescue operations uncovered 20 casualties, six injured individuals, and two individuals trapped under debris. Suharyanto, the BNPB chief, mentioned that multiple residents are still trapped in buildings within the quake-affected zones, with landslides impeding access to various locations.

Efforts to reach Nagekeo, the quake’s epicenter, have been hampered by disrupted communication signals and blocked roads due to landslides. Approximately 2,000 residents from Nagekeo have been evacuated, with extensive damage reported to residences, warehouses, and government structures.

Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena confirmed at least five fatalities from collapsing structures during sleep. Initial BNPB assessments indicated significant damage to residential buildings, schools, health facilities, places of worship, and other infrastructure.

Videos circulating on social media depicted chaotic scenes of buildings collapsing and people fleeing in panic in Maumere. Witnesses reported feeling strong tremors across multiple regions, leading to widespread evacuations amid safety concerns.

Indonesia, situated along the seismic “Pacific Ring of Fire,” faces frequent seismic activities due to tectonic plate interactions, resulting in numerous earthquakes and volcanic eruptions.
