“Loblaw Reinstates Country-of-Origin Labels on Produce Amid Customer Backlash”

Must read

Loblaw has decided to reinstate country-of-origin labels on produce signs in response to widespread customer criticism. The controversy arose when shoppers noticed missing origin information on produce displays in stores.

Karla Hennig from Penticton, B.C., a dedicated supporter of Canadian products, expressed disappointment over the absence of origin details at her local Superstore. Many Loblaw customers across Canada shared their discontent on social media after the grocer removed the country-of-origin labelling, coinciding with escalating trade tensions.

Edmonton resident Karl Mueller raised concerns on social platforms and directly contacted the chain’s headquarters after noticing the absence of origin information at his local Real Canadian Superstore. He emphasized the importance of supporting Canadian businesses, especially during uncertain trade times.

Agricultural economist Ellen Goddard predicted Loblaw would backtrack on its decision due to heightened emotions surrounding trade issues. Following a media inquiry, Loblaw announced plans to reintroduce country-of-origin information on produce displays and introduce a symbol for American products affected by tariffs.

While some shoppers cautiously welcomed Loblaw’s reversal, Mueller emphasized the impact of consumer actions on corporate decisions and stressed the significance of supporting local products. Loblaw had initially defended its decision to remove produce labelling, citing supply chain challenges, but eventually acknowledged the importance of providing origin information to customers.

The grocer’s initial policy change was influenced by regulatory challenges faced earlier, including fines for incorrectly promoting imported food as Canadian. Goddard suggested that the grocer aimed to maintain customer trust by avoiding misleading practices, leading to the temporary removal of origin labels for produce.

Loblaw’s decision to reinstate country-of-origin labelling aligns with customer expectations for transparency in food sourcing. Despite legal clarifications that do not mandate country-of-origin labelling on store signage, some consumers are advocating for new regulations to ensure clear origin information for bulk produce.
