Recent trade discussions between Canada and the U.S. have been described as productive, with Greer meeting multiple times with Canada’s Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc. While the Canadians appear inclined towards a conciliatory approach, Greer indicated that the U.S. remains focused on executing President Trump’s trade policy.
As the August 19 deadline for potential tariffs looms, both countries are seeking a path forward. Canada aims to address existing tariffs on industries such as autos and steel in addition to preventing the imposition of a new 50% tariff. However, disagreements persist on the extent to which sectoral tariffs should be reduced.
Bloc Québécois Leader Yves-François Blanchet expressed skepticism about the likelihood of reaching a deal before the tariff deadline, cautioning against compromising on issues like dairy negotiations. Greer highlighted various trade issues with Canada, particularly mentioning alcohol bans and retaliatory tariffs.
Former Canadian ambassador Frank McKenna countered Greer’s stance, asserting that Canada is merely defending itself against unfair and illegal measures imposed by the U.S. McKenna criticized the notion that might justifies any action, emphasizing the importance of self-defense in international trade relations.
