“Alberta on Alert: Tornado Risk in Eastern & Central Regions”

Must read

Environment Canada has issued alerts indicating the potential for severe thunderstorms capable of producing tornadoes in eastern Alberta. The agency warned of funnel clouds in the area that may make contact with the ground and evolve into landspout tornadoes. Residents are advised to seek shelter in sturdy buildings if a tornado warning is issued, moving away from windows and exterior walls. The risk of landspout tornadoes is expected to persist until early evening.

In a separate weather statement, Environment Canada highlighted the possibility of funnel clouds in central and northern Alberta, with a chance of weak landspout tornadoes forming in those regions. The agency emphasized the importance of taking funnel cloud sightings seriously and preparing to seek shelter promptly. While the weak rotation associated with funnel clouds is typically not hazardous at ground level, there is a potential for intensification leading to weak landspout tornadoes.

Although landspout tornadoes are generally not highly destructive, they can still pose risks such as toppling trees, causing roof damage, and propelling debris short distances. The conditions conducive to funnel cloud development in central and northern Alberta are expected to persist throughout the day, with Environment Canada monitoring for any escalation that could warrant further warnings.
