A shipping mishap left Famous Players Six theatre in Prince George, B.C. without promotional posters for the film “Spider-Man: Brand New Day.” To remedy the situation, employee and artist Drake Landon took matters into his own hands.
Tasked by his manager to create a replacement poster in the style of the internet meme Spooderman, Landon, a 19-year-old, embraced the challenge. Despite being able to draw the actual Spider-Man, he opted to draw Spooderman, a character known for its crude MS Paint parody of Marvel’s Spider-Man that originated around 2012.
Landon’s rendition of Spooderman, mimicking the “Brand New Day” design, featured a simple note apologizing for the lack of official posters. Movie-goer Adam Woodrow, who discovered the hand-drawn poster during a visit to Famous Players with his son Rogan, found it “awesome.” Rogan captured the moment in a photo with Landon, which garnered significant online attention, particularly on platforms like the Marvel Studios subreddit.
The buzz around Landon’s Spooderman poster has led to suggestions that he should create more theatre posters or sell his Spooderman drawings. However, Landon, who usually enjoys drawing robots, intricate machines, and weapons in his free time, remains humble, attributing the credit to the original idea of Spooderman.
While Landon’s dad, Craig, is proud of his son’s artistic talents and newfound recognition, Cineplex plans to replace the Spooderman poster with the official “Spider-Man: Brand New Day” poster. Nevertheless, the hand-drawn version will find a new home within the theatre, and Landon hopes to produce prints of his now-famous creation.
