“Race Against Time: Nepal Flooding Traps Workers in Tunnel”

Must read

Rescue teams in Nepal were in a race against time to reach trapped workers inside hydropower tunnels following a devastating flood that claimed over 1,200 lives. The flood, caused by a glacier collapse near the China-Nepal border, led to widespread destruction. Efforts focused on hydroelectric project tunnels where workers were believed to be stranded, with around 900 individuals missing.

Authorities expressed confidence in finding survivors in the tunnels due to available air supplies and provisions. While hopes of finding survivors elsewhere dwindled, rescue operations persisted in the mountainous region. Specialized teams from India, China, and the United States were aiding in the tunnel rescue missions.

In Tibet, China, where the disaster also struck, official figures revealed casualties and missing individuals, including foreign nationals. The reopening of key routes allowed rescue operations to access the core disaster zone for the first time. Chinese authorities deployed resources like excavators and life-detection equipment to search for survivors in the affected areas.

Efforts to restore normalcy in Nepal included the provision of mental health support for children traumatized by the disaster. The government, with foreign aid, was also working on reestablishing essential services like telecommunications and power supply. Despite facing significant challenges, authorities remained committed to ongoing rescue and relief operations.
