Canada’s Camryn Rogers and Ethan Katzberg emerged victorious in the women’s and men’s hammer throw events at the recent Diamond League competition in Chorzow, Poland. Rogers, hailing from Richmond, B.C., impressed the audience at the Silesian Stadium with a remarkable throw of 77.09 meters on her fourth attempt, securing the top spot. She currently holds the titles of Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games champion. American DeAnna Price claimed second place with a throw of 75.23 meters, followed by Italy’s Sara Fantini in third with 71.95 meters.
Continuing Canada’s dominance in the hammer throw, Nanaimo, B.C.’s Ethan Katzberg triumphed in the men’s event with a best throw of 82.92 meters. Katzberg now boasts Olympic, world, and Commonwealth Games titles. Germany’s Merlin Hummel secured the second position with 81.25 meters, while Hungary’s Bence Halász finished third with a throw of 79.44 meters.
In the men’s 100m final, Canada’s Andre De Grasse placed sixth with a time of 9.96 seconds at the Diamond League meet in Silesia, Poland. Reigning world champion Oblique Seville from Jamaica set a meeting record by winning in 9.83 seconds, with two-time Olympic silver medalist Kenny Bednarek of the United States coming in second at 9.87 seconds. Former world champion Christian Coleman claimed third place with a time of 9.93 seconds.
The women’s 100m race showcased an exciting competition, with American Melissa Jefferson-Wooden securing the victory in a season-best time of 10.78 seconds. Saint Lucia’s Julien Alfred finished second with a season-best time of 10.83 seconds, while American star Sha’Carri Richardson, the 2023 world champion and 2024 Olympic silver medalist, took third place with a time of 10.96 seconds.
American Ethan Strand caused an upset by winning the men’s 1,500m race in a season-best time of 3:30.77. Kenyan teenager Phanuel Kipkosgei Koech finished second in 3:31.14, with American Cole Hocker closely behind in third place with a time of 3:31.16. Norwegian distance-running sensation Jakob Ingebrigtsen secured the fourth spot. The next Diamond League meeting will be on August 27 in Zurich, Switzerland, followed by the Diamond League Final in Brussels. The track and field season will culminate with the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship, scheduled for September 11-13 in Budapest. Katzberg has earned an automatic qualification for the Ultimate Championship due to his reigning Olympic and world champion status in the men’s hammer throw, while Rogers, holding similar titles on the women’s side, will not participate as the women’s hammer throw event is not part of the championship program.
