Ukraine’s SBU security service headquarters in Kyiv was struck by a Russian drone on Friday, marking a significant target hit during the ongoing conflict. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy revealed that the drone was specifically aimed at the office of the Security Service’s head in the building. This attack, viewed as a major escalation in the war, led to Zelenskyy’s vow to retaliate as Russian airstrikes on Kyiv entered the tenth consecutive day.
Following the strike, thick black smoke billowed from Kyiv’s historic city center, with the city’s mayor confirming at least 12 injuries. Notably, Ukrainian government buildings have seldom faced damage from drone and missile assaults throughout the years of conflict with Russia.
Zelenskyy announced a determined response to mirror the attack and discussed preparations with SBU acting head Oleksandr Poklad. The SBU holds a crucial role in Ukraine’s war efforts, executing impactful strikes within Russia to disrupt Moscow’s military capabilities and energy infrastructure. The agency has orchestrated notable operations against Russia, including the 2022 bombing of a Russian-occupied Crimean bridge and the 2025 drone operation code-named Spiderweb targeting Russian strategic bombers.
As diplomatic negotiations stall, with U.S. envoys expected to visit Moscow and Kyiv, the conflict continues to intensify. Russia’s alteration of tactics, such as daytime drone strikes, has added to the fear and exhaustion of residents enduring relentless attacks. The incessant air-raid sirens have become a daily occurrence in Kyiv, prompting some residents to consider leaving the city for safety.
Despite the challenges, Ukrainians like Ivan Datsiv, whose apartment was severely damaged by a Russian drone, try to maintain resilience. With the situation escalating, many are left hoping for a resolution to the conflict while navigating the constant threat of attacks.
