Buses transporting crew members of the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier arrived in the coastal city of Pattaya, Thailand, on Thursday for a scheduled port call following an extensive deployment in the Middle East.
During its mission supporting U.S. operations against Iran, the Lincoln set a new record for an uninterrupted time at sea, surpassing 260 days. Concerns were raised last month about the crew’s mental well-being and shortages of essential food supplies aboard the carrier.
Despite these challenges, the U.S. Navy downplayed any issues, with President Donald Trump remarking that the deployment was not as long as desired. The ship’s total deployment period reached 286 days, with 264 consecutive days at sea before arriving in Chonburi province.
Expected to depart Thailand over the weekend, the USS Abraham Lincoln will resume its journey back to the United States. Upon disembarking from buses with their belongings, crew members expressed excitement about their stay in Thailand.
Vendors and travel agents gathered near the Hard Rock Hotel, the designated meeting point for the sailors, offering various souvenirs and services. Meanwhile, two other ships from the Lincoln’s strike group are stationed in different ports in Thailand.
Local vendors, like A-ngoon Sombat, traveled long distances to sell their goods to the visiting sailors, hoping for successful sales during the ship’s stay. As service members explored Pattaya, many engaged in shopping activities at Terminal 21 mall.
A young navigator aboard the USS Frank E. Petersen Jr., part of the Lincoln’s strike group, shared his high morale and relief at being closer to returning home after his first deployment with the U.S. Navy. As the crew enjoyed their time on land, bystanders flocked to witness the massive carrier as a unique attraction.
Visitors expressed awe at the technological marvel and sheer size of the USS Abraham Lincoln, emphasizing the ship’s advanced systems and capabilities. With the ship’s commanding officer hinting at possible supply stops before heading home, the exact return date to the U.S. remains undisclosed.
