Romanian authorities have formally charged social media influencer Andrew Tate with multiple crimes, including trafficking minors, money laundering, engaging in sexual activities with a minor, and tampering with witnesses. His brother Tristan has been implicated as an accomplice in the case. The Tate siblings, who have American and British citizenship, were apprehended in Miami in late July following a request from the UK for their extradition.
Having primarily resided in Romania since 2017, the Tates have been under investigation for various offenses, including human trafficking, since December 2022. They have consistently denied any wrongdoing. According to Romanian prosecutors, the brothers enticed their victims by pretending to pursue romantic relationships or marriage, only to coerce them into producing explicit content for a webcam business.
In response to the indictment, the Tates’ Romanian lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, emphasized that they would meticulously review the charges and contest any legal inadequacies through proper legal channels. The accused individuals maintain their innocence.
The Tate brothers are currently detained in the United States while a decision is pending on their extradition to the UK, where they face charges of rape. The Romanian anti-organized crime unit, DIICOT, handling the case, has not confirmed if they will seek extradition from the US. While the brothers could be tried in absentia in Romania, the trial commencement may be delayed as per Romanian legal procedures.
An investigation revealed that Andrew Tate allegedly victimized a 15-year-old in the UK in 2012 before relocating her to Bucharest, Romania, where he exploited her through coercion and intimidation, forcing her into producing explicit media content for online platforms. Tristan allegedly contributed to the abuse by using physical force against the victim.
Prosecutors stated that the brothers retained a substantial portion of the victim’s earnings, an estimated $1.25 million US, from the video chat services, attempting to conceal the funds by purchasing luxury vehicles. Although the brothers faced previous indictments for human trafficking in Romania, the case was returned to prosecutors in late 2024 due to the exclusion of certain evidence.
Andrew Tate, known for his controversial views on women, admitted to relocating to Romania due to what he perceived as leniency in law enforcement. The brothers have built a substantial online following, particularly among young men, by projecting an extravagant, hyper-masculine image involving fast cars and relationships with attractive women.
