In a surprising turn of events, Molly, an African spurred tortoise not native to Oak Hammock Marsh in Manitoba’s Interlake, was discovered leisurely wandering around the wetland area. The unlikely sighting left staff members, including Gillian Malchuk, a nature interpreter at Oak Hammock, perplexed by the tortoise’s presence in such a distant location from its natural habitat.
After receiving reports of tortoise sightings, the staff initially dismissed them, assuming the sightings were misidentifications of the common snapping turtle found in Manitoba. However, a report on iNaturalist, a nature observation app, confirmed the unusual presence of Molly at the marsh.
Upon locating Molly in the parking lot, staff members were astonished by her size and appearance. They promptly provided her with food, guided tours, and care until they were able to reunite her with her rightful owners. Molly’s family had been searching for her and were overjoyed to be reunited with their beloved pet.
Despite the happy reunion, the mystery of how Molly ended up 20 kilometers away from home remains unsolved. While theories suggest a well-meaning individual may have relocated her to the marsh, the staff at Oak Hammock speculate that Molly might have embarked on the journey herself.
