Aston Martin has acknowledged a minor breach in the Formula 1 cost cap regulations for the 2024 season. The team did not exceed the spending limit, but a procedural mistake occurred during the submission of their self-assessment to the FIA, prompting closer examination by the governing body.
Since 2021, teams have been subject to annual financial restrictions, with certain expenses like driver salaries and marketing costs excluded. The cost cap for the 2024 season was approximately £124 million.
All teams were required to submit their self-assessments for the 2024 season by March 31. While the FIA had previously issued compliance certificates to all 10 teams in September for the past two years, as of late October, the governing body has not made a similar announcement.
Speculations arose due to this delay, suggesting potential breaches, and it has now been revealed that two teams may have violated the rules.
Aston Martin has admitted to a procedural breach, as they failed to provide an auditor’s signature on a document by the March 31 deadline. Consequently, the FIA deemed this a breach, and the team has entered into an Accepted Breach Agreement (ABA) with the governing body, resulting in a minor fine. Another team, unnamed, is facing allegations of overspending in 2024, which they dispute.
Red Bull previously breached the cost cap rules in their inaugural year, exceeding the limit by 1.6 percent. They reached an agreement with the FIA, paying a £6 million fine and forfeiting 10 percent of their wind tunnel testing time over a year.
The FIA’s announcement on the 2024 cost cap filings has been postponed due to the alleged overspending issue, as the governing body aims to disclose all teams’ outcomes simultaneously. The team in question is reportedly challenging the breach allegation against them.
An FIA spokesperson stated that the review of the 2024 submissions from teams and power unit manufacturers is underway, with results expected to be released soon. The FIA refrains from commenting on individual team submissions, and the review outcomes will be publicized once all assessments are finalized.
