“Ending Two-Child Cap: A Step Towards Equality”

Must read

I advocate for equal opportunities for every child born in our nation to thrive. Every child deserves access to quality education, a secure home, and regular meals.

Last year’s Budget saw the removal of the two-child cap as part of my commitment to creating a more just and prosperous society. The previous government’s policy had deprived countless children of basic necessities like food, warmth, and clothing, exacerbating financial struggles for many families. It also introduced the controversial rape clause into the welfare system.

As the former Labour Chancellor, I take pride in ending the two-child cap and implementing initiatives such as free breakfast clubs and school meals for families on Universal Credit. By 2030, we aim to lift over half a million children out of poverty, giving them a brighter future.

These children will have better opportunities to pursue education without the burdens of poverty. I recently met with some of these children and advocates, hearing their stories of resilience and determination in the face of adversity.

Today, Parliament is set to vote on supporting these families, marking a crucial step in undoing the harm caused by long-standing policies. While I am clear on my decision, it is up to the Conservatives and Reform to justify their stance.

Our mission does not end here. We must continue to work towards a society where every child starts life on an equal footing, and where every parent receives the respect and support they deserve. This is the driving force behind my political career and government service, and I remain steadfast in achieving these goals.
