A father abandoned his three-month-old daughter in a baby swing, leading to her suffocation while he traveled over 200 miles away for a shocking reason. Jacob Vera, 26, was supposed to care for his two children while their mother, Jessica Brown, was at work. However, Vera left the children unattended, with the mother returning to find her 16-month-old crying in a crib and baby Isabella swaddled and rocking in a swing.
Upon trying to pick up her infant daughter, Ms. Brown noticed that Isabella was not moving normally or breathing. She sought help, but Vera had left with the only phone, delaying assistance for the child. Police from the Muncie Police Department in Indiana responded to the Bestway Inn after Ms. Brown discovered the distressing situation upon returning from work.
Ms. Brown entrusted Vera with the care of both children, only to find him missing upon her return. Vera later admitted to police that he had left the children unattended to travel to Illinois, citing a desire to avoid conflict with Jessica Brown. Medical personnel, upon arriving at the scene, observed signs of rigor mortis in the child, indicating she had passed away approximately two hours earlier.
A coroner’s report confirmed that the cause of the three-month-old’s death was asphyxiation. Isabella was described as a delightful child with a radiant smile and captivating eyes in an obituary that mourned her untimely departure. The obituary emphasized her joyful demeanor and loving nature, urging readers to cherish their children and show them love and appreciation.
Witnesses at the motel shared that Vera had attempted to secure rides to Chicago and Illinois on the day of the incident. Vera eventually admitted his negligence, acknowledging that leaving the children unattended was his mistake. He pleaded guilty to neglect of a dependent resulting in serious bodily injury and faces nine years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for December 1.
