“Half a Million Households to Receive Cold Weather Payments”

Must read

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has activated Cold Weather Payments in close to 250 postcode regions across England and Wales. This decision coincides with the issuance of multiple winter weather alerts by the Met Office for the upcoming week. Approximately half a million households are set to benefit from these payments, receiving £25 each to help cover heating expenses.

The Cold Weather Payments are now in effect for a total of 246 postcode areas, including regions like Greater Manchester, Cumbria, Staffordshire, Gloucestershire, and parts of Wales and Northern Ireland. Eligible recipients can check if their postcode is included in the payment scheme through an interactive map provided.

These payments are specifically for individuals in England and Wales who receive various benefits. In Northern Ireland, a similar program is in place, while in Scotland, support for heating costs is given annually and not tied to specific cold weather periods. This winter, Cold Weather Payments have been triggered for 697 postcode regions, with some areas receiving two payments due to prolonged cold snaps.

The latest round of payments is expected to reach around 532,000 households, including a significant portion in Greater Manchester. The total expenditure for today’s Cold Weather Payments is estimated at £13.3 million. In England and Wales, payments are activated when average temperatures are forecasted to drop below zero for seven consecutive days. Meteorologists are predicting a cold spell leading into the New Year with subzero temperatures anticipated in many areas.

Under the DWP scheme, an estimated 3.9 million individuals are eligible for Cold Weather Payments, with 1.2 million of them receiving Pensions Credit. Those receiving benefits like Pension Credit, Income Support, JSA, ESA, Universal Credit, and Support for Mortgage Interest may qualify for Cold Weather Payments. However, not all recipients of these benefits automatically receive the payment, as eligibility depends on specific criteria outlined on GOV.UK.

The £25 payments are directly deposited into recipients’ bank accounts within 14 working days, with a payment reference containing the recipient’s National Insurance number followed by ‘DWP CWP’. Applications for these payments are not required. The triggering of Cold Weather Payments is determined by various weather stations, with estimates of eligible households provided for each station, including those in Northern Ireland.
