Hamilton’s streets are set to transform into a vibrant stage this upcoming weekend as dancers from various parts of the region converge to honor hip-hop culture. The 73 ‘Til Infinity: Outdoor Dance Series was launched in 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of hip-hop, with its title paying homage to the pivotal year of 1973 when hip-hop emerged.
In its fourth year now, this free event offers a range of activities including dance performances, workshops, a block party, and an all-styles dance battle. Josh Taylor, the artistic director of Defining Movement Dance and the curator of 73 ‘Til Infinity, described the event as a celebration of street dance culture.
Kicking off on Tuesday, which coincided with hip-hop’s birthday, the festivities began with free workshops on King William Street. The weekend will feature a block party on Friday and a dance battle on Saturday. Taylor emphasized that the event aims to shine a spotlight on dancers, putting them at the forefront of the celebration.
Claris and Amelia Menjivar, who have been involved in 73 ‘Til Infinity since its inception, emphasized the importance of showcasing dancers and educating people about the roots of hip-hop culture. They highlighted the significance of understanding the history behind the art form and its deep connections to Black and marginalized communities.
The event will showcase various street-dance styles such as breaking, locking, popping, and whacking, with Claris stressing the importance of learning the history of hip-hop to fully engage with the culture. The weekend will culminate in an all-styles dance battle on Saturday evening, judged by Suga Pop, a renowned street dancer with a rich history in the dance industry.
Despite Toronto’s prominence in the dance scene, Taylor highlighted the thriving dance community in Hamilton, emphasizing the supportive and interconnected nature of the city’s dancers. The Menjivar sisters echoed the sentiment of inclusivity within the community, welcoming dancers of all levels to participate and experience the energy of the event.
