A woman facing charges related to a fatal hit-and-run near Fredericton had her court appearance delayed by three weeks. Vanessa Ricketson, 27, is accused in the death of a 19-year-old man from Norton. Initially set to select a trial mode in Fredericton provincial court on Tuesday, she was absent on that day.
The incident allegedly occurred when the victim, who had stopped on the side of the Trans-Canada Highway near Oromocto to change a tire, was fatally struck by Ricketson, who then left the scene. Defense attorney Shane Hill, representing Emily Cochrane in this case, requested a postponement for evidence disclosure, which was granted by Judge Lyne Raymond for September 1.
Although the victim remains unidentified, police confirmed his safety measures, including pulling over sufficiently, wearing a reflective vest, and activating the vehicle’s hazard lights. The RCMP declined to comment on whether Ricketson was the individual of interest named two days after the March 19 incident. Ricketson was charged nearly four months after the event and is currently not in police custody.
