LIV Golf sensation Tom McKibbin attributes his record-breaking 60 at the Hong Kong Open to his drive to secure a spot in the Masters and the Open. Despite advice from compatriot and mentor Rory McIlroy, McKibbin opted not to join the Saudi-backed tour at the beginning of the year.
Having excelled in the Race to Dubai last season and earning a PGA Tour playing card, McKibbin placed 17th in his debut LIV Golf season, accumulating $5,768,351. Currently ranked 109th globally, he faces the challenge of not being qualified for the Majors next year.
The Hong Kong Open not only features a $2 million prize pool but also presents an opportunity for the top-performing player to earn berths at Augusta and Royal Birkdale next year. McKibbin, aiming for his first Masters appearance, delivered his best professional score with a remarkable opening round of 60.
Expressing his motivation, McKibbin stated, “For these events to have those spots up for grabs, they definitely motivate you to go out and play well, knowing what’s sort of on the table come the end of the week.” Embracing an aggressive approach, he emphasized the importance of maintaining a bold mentality on the course.
In 2021, McKibbin turned professional and made history as the youngest Irish victor on the DP World Tour since McIlroy at the 2023 Porsche European Open. Joining Jon Rahm’s Legion XIII team for a reported $4 million marked a significant milestone in his career.
Despite concerns raised by McIlroy regarding his decision to forgo the opportunity to play in the four Majors and the Ryder Cup, McKibbin highlighted his focus on seizing the chance to compete consistently with top-tier players. The allure of playing among elite competitors influenced his choice, considering he was not currently eligible for major tournaments.
Additionally, the Australian Open in early December and the South African Open in late February will provide further opportunities for LIV Golf participants to secure Masters berths. The Hong Kong Open contributes to the International Series Rankings on the Asian Tour, where the highest-ranked player earns an invitation to LIV Golf.
