Two fortunate Premium Bond holders residing in Liverpool and Bedfordshire have each won a £1 million prize, as confirmed by the National Savings & Investments. The winning Bond number for the £1 million prize in Central Bedfordshire is 489TB013219, purchased in February 2022, while the winner in Liverpool holds the Bond number 040QJ919368, bought in October 2004. These winners are part of the 6.1 million Premium Bond prizes totaling £408 million drawn by ERNIE this month.
ERNIE, the Electronic Random Number Indicator Equipment, utilizes advanced technology to generate random numbers for the monthly prize draw. The total amount won by Premium Bond holders has now reached £40 billion since the first draw in 1957, with a total of 815 million prizes awarded. While two winners received £1 million each, the majority of prizes are smaller, with 78 winners receiving £100,000, 154 winners receiving £50,000, and 2,643,007 prizes valued at £25 each.
Andrew Westhead, NS&I retail director, congratulated the jackpot winners and highlighted the significant prize payouts totaling over £408 million this month alone. Premium Bonds allow individuals to save up to £50,000 with the backing of the Treasury, offering the chance to win tax-free prizes. The jackpot prize was raised to £1 million in April 1994, with two £1 million prizes now awarded monthly.
Premium Bond holders can check their winnings through the Premium Bonds prize checker app or the NS&I website the day after the first working day of each month, with the next update scheduled for Tuesday, February 3. Winners will receive notifications of their prizes via email or text if their contact details are registered. NS&I cautioned that unclaimed prizes totaling nearly £114.8 million exist, urging customers to update their details to avoid missing out.
